Lisbon Calling: Wines of Portugal
The old alliance between England and Portugal has left a long memory in this country with Port a firm favourite, and never more so than at Christmas. But beyond the strapping sweet wines of the Douro valley, Portuguese wine has been undeservedly neglected. In Portugal, wine is as integral to life as it is in the Mediterranean and the centuries of heritage have left Portugal with a dizzying array of grape varieties and a kaleidoscope of different terroirs.
From cool crisp whites full of the tang of the Atlantic to the powerful reds of the hot interior where broiling sunshine combines with hot schist soils to give full-bodied intense wines, and up into the mountains where cool winds bring freshness to the wines of the granite plateau of Dao, there is plenty to explore.
The wonderful team at Theatre Of WIne has chosen six favourites from different regions and in styles, ranging from sparkling to fortified, so get ready for a voyage of discovery worthy of Portugal's seafaring past.
All wines will be accompanied by small boards of cheese and charcuterie to share.
